As the title indicates, these two cars are pretty different from each other. The Renault Kwid has a smaller engine than the Tata Punch. The latter also command more premium than the former. The Renault Kwid’s price starts from Rs 4.70 lakh, while the Tata Punch has a starting price of Rs 6 lakh. All are ex-showroom figures.
It is also worth mentioning that the top-most variant of the Kwid is nearly priced to the base variant of the Punch.
So, let’s see how the Renault Kwid stacks up with the Tata Punch in terms of features and specifications. Let’s begin, then!
Specifications
For starters, let’s talk about the chassis of these two vehicles. The French carmaker built the Renault Kwid on the Renault-Nissan-designed CMF-A+ platform that also underpins other Renault cars, such as the Kwid and the Triber and Nissan’s Magnite.
On the other hand, the indigenous car manufacturer Tata Motors made the Punch on their robust ALFA-ARC platform. This platform underpins the Tata Altroz. It is also worth mentioning that these two Tata cars boast a five-star safety rating, awarded by the Global NCAP.
Speaking of safety ratings, the Renault Kwid doesn’t impress us, as it has a one-star safety rating.
As far as the figures go, both vehicles are only available in petrol and have one engine option on offer only. Under the Kwid’s hood, you will find a 1.0-litre (999cc), three-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is tuned to churn out 67 bhp at 5500 rpm and 91 Nm of peak torque at 4250 rpm.
This engine can either be mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT gearbox.
On the flip side, the Tata Punch also has only one engine option. It is powered by a 1.2-litre (1199cc), three-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is capable of churning out 84 bhp at 6000 rpm and 115 Nm of peak torque at 3300 rpm. It can be had with a standard five-speed manual transmission and an optional five-speed AMT. The engine output of the Tata Punch is not bad, especially for a car of its size. In addition, the Tata Punch will also have a CNG version soon. As per sources, it will work in tandem with the same petrol engine but will have a low state of tune. That said, the CNG version might produce 72.5 bhp and 103 Nm of torque. Like other CNG cars, the Tata Punch CNG will be exclusive to the five-speed manual transmission.
As for fuel economy, the Renault Kwid’s mileage ranges between 21.46 km/l and 22.3 km/l. In parallel, the Tata Punch’s mileage ranges between 18.8 km/l and 20.09 km/l. In addition, you can expect the Punch CNG’s mileage to be even more but that will only the time will tell. Moreover, it is worth noting that the above-mentioned mileage figures are ARAI-certified. The mileage can vary with the combination of engine and transmission, the local traffic conditions and individuals’ driving styles.
Keeping their engine performances aside, let’s now jump to their suspension setups. The Renault Kwid stands on a MacPherson Strut with a lower transverse link at the front and a twist-beam suspension with coil spring at the rear.
In contrast, the Tata Punch has an independent McPherson Strut with a lower wishbone and coil spring at the front and a semi-independent twist beam with coil spring and shock absorber at the rear.
Like other Tata cars, the Punch also has an impressive suspension setup and that too at its price point.
Please note that these two vehicles are engineered keeping the conditions of Indian roads in mind. Their suspension setups are well-suited for it. That said, they can absorb the bumps from potholes with ease and can sail through the undulations without letting the passenger(s) lament about the ride quality.
Features
Before starting, please note that the features mentioned here belong to the top-most variant of the Renault Kwid and the second variant from the base variant, the Pure Rhythm MT, of the Tata Punch. It will include both exclusive and common features.
As for the Renault Kwid’s exclusive features, you will get a manual anti-glare IRVM, a tyre pressure monitoring system, remote central locking, a reverse camera, two 12V ports, and front seatback pockets. Further, it offers front and rear power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, internal with key boot lid opener, etc. For exterior lighting, it has LED DRLs, LED taillights, halogen front fog lamps, a fully digital instrument cluster, and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with GPS navigating system.
On the safety front, it boasts traction control, hill hold control and ESP.
In contrast, the Tata Punch’s exclusive features include child seat anchorages, central locking (with key), cabin-boot access, internally adjustable ORVMs, turn indicators on ORVMs, electric tailgate release, etc. Further, it has halogen taillights, lights on vanity mirrors (driver and co-driver), a headlight height adjuster, and a semi-digital instrument cluster. As for entertainment, the Punch has a four-inch digital infotainment unit with iPod compatibility.
However, the common features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, speed-sensing door lock, child-safety lock, manual HVAC, rear parking sensors, etc. Other features are voice commands, steering-mounted controls, Bluetooth, and auxiliary and USB ports.
Prices and Variants
The indigenous car manufacturer sells the Punch in four broad variants: Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Creative. The new Camo edition is offered on the Adventure and Accomplished trims. It has a total of twenty-six variants. The Tata Punch’s price starts at Rs 6 lakh for the base variant, the Pure Petrol MT, and goes up to Rs 9.52 lakh for the top variant, the Creative IRA DT AMT.
In contrast, the Kwid has five variants: RXE, RXL, RXL (O), RXT and Climber. It has a total of seven variants. The Renault Kwid’s price starts at Rs 4.70 lakh for the base variant, the RXE Petrol MT, and goes up to Rs 6.33 lakh for the top variant, the Climber AMT.
